Top 10 Fantasy Football Defense Projections

Here is a list of the Top 10 Fantasy Football Defense Projections

I normally don't pick defenses until I have my starting RB's, WR's, QB, and TE lined up which means about round 5-6 is a decent time to pick up one of these top defenses in the league.

#1 Green Bay Packers- Clay Matthews and the returning Super Bowl champs are expected to be the top defense in the league again this season. With only allowing 234 total points against them as opposed to most teams allowing 400+ you can rely on Green Bay's Defense to bring the fantasy points at a high volume.

#2 Eagles- I'm sure you've already heard of the Eagles free agent pick up Nnamdi Asomugha, who is one of (if not the) best cornerback in the league. His profile has been kept somewhat under rated for two reasons; First he played for the raiders, and Second, only 27 passes were thrown his way last season. With this addition and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie the Eagles should be a solid defensive choice.

#3 Ravens- When do the Ravens not have an outstanding defense? I will tell you when, once Ray Lewis hits 65 that’s when the Ravens defense will be on the decline. Even with the loss of Landry the Ravens still have pro bowler Ed Reed and the all powerful Ray Lewis. If you had trouble last year with a defense than why not pick up a good D like the Ravens early?

#4 Steelers- The Steelers defense has been rock solid lately with James Harrison scaring QB's and Polamalu  picking up the trash. The Steelers may be even hungrier for a Super Bowl ring this year because of the loss to Green Bay. Not to mention the Steelers defense had the most sacks in the league last season.

#5 Da Bears- Yet another team that you can always count on their defense. The bears made it to the NFC championship game last year with a make-shift offense only because of how hard it was to score against them. With Brian Urlacher and Julius Peppers on the team you can bet that there won't be too many defensive mistakes.

#6 New York Jets- The Jets (who I drafted last year) have a solid defense with cornerback's Darrell Revis and Antonio Cromartie in the backfield. They brought in a decent amount of fantasy points but not as much as I was expecting hence the number 6 spot.

#7 New EnglandPatriots- The Patriots always seem to be on top of their game offensively and defensively. I doubt this will be the year were the Patriots don't make it to the play offs. Especially with the offense accumulating a majority of ball time, you can count on the defense to stay fresh and not make to many mistakes. Did I mention that they also signed Albert Haynesworth during the off season?

#8 New Orleans Saints- Every year I notice that the Saint's defense gets better and better. With players Jonathan Vilma and Darren Sharper on the team why wouldn't they have a strong defense? One thing to note that the Saints defense does well is the amount of total points scored against them 271 last season. If you forgot to pick a defense early in the draft then look for the Saints D as an easy out.

#9 San Diego Chargers- With the great defensive coordinator Ron Rivera gone I am somewhat skeptical of the Chargers defense but they did acquire a few solid players in the off season. Bob Sanders and first round draft pick Corey Liuget are sure to add fantasy relevance to the Chargers defense this season. The only concern now is the special teams need a dramatic change from last year (When will Nate Kaeding go back to Kindergarten?).

#10 New York Giants- With 46 sacks and 23 fumble recoveries the New York Giants defense is going to add some fantasy value to your team. As long as Osi Umenyiora stays on the roster the Giants will be a decent draft pick.

There you have it, my Top 10 Fantasy Football Defense Projections for the 2011 Season. It will be interesting to see how well these defenses do over the season because we all know that a few key injuries can make a great team fall apart.

Let me know what you think about this list and any suggestions/arguments for another defense that should be on this list.
